Coffee break with hering sandwich and strange egg slices. How on Earth is this produced: even bar of egg, certainly many feet long, with yolk in the middle as an even bar also it surrounded by an even layer of egg white. Wife says that it does not taste genuine. I have a rough grading in all matters. I cannot tell the difference. Hering is the main thing, anyway, really tasty. <p> Actually aiming to lunch in <a href="http://www.tertinkartano.fi/">Tertti manor</a> north from Mikkeli. Already previously, first time visiting, I had assessed as being of the most modest quality. So also this time. Some insignificant bakery producct of 'muikku', size of bird portion, totally without own character. Hope that others got better value. Souvenir art seemed to be their main line. I am not at all interested to buy. Pleasant looking, that is all. <p> Via Juva to Savonlinna, about 100 km in pleasant country landscape. In Savonlinna settling in <a href="http://www.savonlinnanseurahuone.fi/">Seurahuone</a> the uppermost floor with a superb view to the lake, supposedly Saimaa also here. The garage of Seurahuone seemed quite a challenge looking from door. Steep uphill to two meters and a big car there to be turned around narrowly. Success first trial! <p> Supper with 'muikku' fish in <a href="http://www.ravintolamajakka.fi/">Majakka</a>. Here muikku has always been, what it should be. This way correction of the big blunder year ago, when we ate in Imatran Valtionhotelli unfresh fried muikku. Luckily our guests had no point of comparison, so perhaps they did not pay attention, but we really did. Wife did not forget to reclamate to the hotel by email. Even I noticed, although eating everything that is brought to me. A bottle of white wine for four is just the right portion. Chilean Chardonais, others politely praised. In my mouth just exceeds the lower limit, not nearly the value of the cheapest marketed by Alko, Magyar Fehér Bor. Not nearly! The best entertainment one can think of. And it is continuing all week long. Everything else is good except showing the Marathon run and 50 km walk, direction below all limits. Scarcely an eyeful sleep, but nevertheless not tired. Breakfast in the nearby Bistro, no complaints. Included in the price. Then to the market, which is only a shade of what it was during the <a href="http://www.askokorpela.fi/harraste/teatteri/TeaOpi-2008-448.htm#460">Opera Festival</a> a month ago. The wood art salesman, however, on spot, the fruit and vegetable merchants alike. I got the idea of buying strawberries. Later was highly praised for this idea. <p> <a href="20090818798-Korpela_Salli-Darling_John-Darling_Melva-Olavinlinna.JPG"><img src="20090818798-Korpela_Salli-Darling_John-Darling_Melva-Olavinlinna.JPG" Height=150 align=right></a> The fortress Olavinlinna vas visited. Street works prevented us to drive close to the castle. There was quite a walk on partially pebble layered street. Therefore I remain photographing and waiting while others go deeper into the castle. <p> Then heading to Kerimäki <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Kerim%C3%A4ki&hl=fi&sourceid=gd&rlz=1D2GGLD_fiFI296FI297&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&ei=un6VSvKRE5rimwPNiOWmAQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1"> 'the World's largest Christian Wood church'</a>. I have always belonged to those believing that the drawings were composed in ellens while the materializing in metres. This theory is vehemently denied by the Kerimäki people. The church can take 3000 or was it 4000 visitors simultaneously. The idea was that there should ve space for all the parish members. Was it so that the <a href="http://www.virolahdensrk.fi/yleista.html">church of my home village Virolahti</a> was built by the same master. (It wqas not, Virolahti is older.) Virolahti church would easily stand inside this. (By the way, later I heard also an alternative 'inch-centimetre' therory giving as the coefficient 2.5, while the 'ellen-metre' theory gives 'only' 1.66). <p> At the root of the church hill there is a pleasant café, where we drink the coffee. The patron pleasantly chats with us and 'pulla' has just been taken from the oven. A pleasant rest. <p> Our way is to <a href="http://www.retretti.fi/index.asp?language=1">Retrettiä</a>. On the road we woud remember that it is only after Punkaharju, but before it is. After, of course, if coming from the South, as we undoubtedly have sometimes come. The Edelfelt art exhibition is for me a positive surprise: enough works. A couple of times I have so badly disppointed to the works of bad painters that I have not gone at all and only waited in the aula tills wife has gone through the caves and other exhibition. Many times we have visited it: Finnish-American-Japanese Clifton Karhu I rmember as a good performer, some Russian master likewise, Repin or Aivazovsky. Once there was the contents of a French country side museum, as of representing the French impressionism. I was so rudely stuck that I wrote a long story of disppointment into the guest book. We drink coffee at Retretti. Then towards Lappeenranta. <p> In Lappeenranta we search at least half an hour <a href="http://www.scandichotels.fi/fi/Hotels/Countries/Suomi/Lappeenranta/Hotels/Scandic-Patria/">Scandic Hotel</a>, which should be at the address of 'Satama' - Harbor. We drive along the entire coast line to and fro. Nowhere the hotel sign. At last we have to ask the competitor. Then found on a side street. We did not check, whether there was any guidance in the main avenue. We did not notice, anyway. If we had memrized the street address beforehand, the navigator would have found. We imagined that it would be seen in the Harbor. It was not. Lodging to satisfactory rooms. Surprisingly many people going on board, some travelling through Vyborg to St. Peterbourg and some staying overnight in Vyborg returning back by bus next day. This would have been a reasonable solution for us, too, but Salli did not want to have our guests to meet people staying overnight in Druszba and drinking and making noise all night long. But would it have been so? I do not know. <p> The canal is an interesting experience. I somehow would remember that I have been there before, but now I am no more so sure. The length of the canal is 43 km, 23 on Finnish side and 20 on Russian. There are 8 locks, 3 on the Finnish side and 5 in Russia. The difference of the altitude between the lake Saimaa and the gulf of Finland is 76 metres. The first lock is the the highest, more than 12 metres. All locks are 83 m long and 13.2 m wide. Quite astonishingly rapidly the lock is filled and emptied, in some few minutes only, then again afore with full speed. You feel that the speed is quite high, but the trip takes some 5 hour, anyway. We get a very tasty lunch on board: meat or fish. The trip to Vyborg does not seem too long because of the lunch. On our way back we are tired and some people get a nap, for which there is room enough in the saloon, because so many passengers stay in Vyborg. <p> In Vyborg the customs really is only a formality. We go through in all leisure. The pass control looks severely, however. We are transported to the market. The market is empty, however. It has been closed, because of too much disturbance. <p> The same merchandices are available in the market hall, where the supply is colorful and rich. We of course at once look fo garlic and 'wild garlic'. I find the china on supply very beautiful, there are at least half adozen different tea services. Did not buy, although would have liked. Salli buys a sauna cap of felt and tries to make the guests also buy ones, as they have sauna in their house. They are not interested. I admire the fruit desk and start reasoning with the merchant. He says that he has come from Madagascar. <p> <a href="20090819883-Hedelmatiski-Kauppahalli-Viipuri.JPG"><img src="20090819883-Hedelmatiski-Kauppahalli-Viipuri.JPG" Height=150 align=right></a> He asks me different things, so do I ask him, when he has come here, for instance. He says in '37. What he might have meant with this. Was certainly not born yet at that time as I, which I said to him. He was at least 10 years younger than me. I went to him four times and finally also bought 'datepeaches' (in center part of the picture), which I saw first time in my life. Is there such a thing? He gave me a proof, really tasty. Nothing reminds me of dates, the taste is peach and pear, maybe. Very tasty, anyway. Should I have bought more of them? Would they have stayed good until home? <p> Cherries I was buying, but did not pay attention. I got sour cherries and not the sweet ones. In Russian they have different names 28H=O (vishnya) and G5@5H=O (chereshnya). I do not, however, straight away remember which ones are which. The café of the market hall does not seem attractive, so we go to the nearby <a href="http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Py%C3%B6re%C3%A4_torni">Round Tower</a>, an attraction in itself. In the Wikipedia one gets the impression that just the Russian name of it would be Bock-castle. This is not the case, but the Russian name is exactly Round Tower (@C3;0O 10H=O). We do not remember to ask prices as it was tipped, but we did not consider them too high. Coffee and bakery and our guests found even coke. Then at the door two girls start playing music. They were not just any players of dombra and whatever it was, guitarr as it is seen in the picture. <a href="20090819878-Soittajat-Pyorea_Torni-Viipuri.JPG"><img src="20090819878-Soittajat-Pyorea_Torni-Viipuri.JPG" Height=150 align=right></a> <p> Very beautifully and with good volume they play Russian tunes. I ask: from where such mastery. Yes, they are music teachers, so professionals. Where have they learned? In Pskov. I tell them, that we are going there in a fortnight. We are only glad to leave some money into their case, even if they could not play 'Yellow rose of Texas' or any other American tune, except Zhivago, if that is American? They did not play anything Finnish, either. Or did they? Young women, good-looking and full of energy, some 30-40 years of age. <p> <a href="20090819885-Madagaskarilainen_kauppias.JPG"><img src="20090819885-Madagaskarilainen_kauppias.JPG" Height=150 align=right></a> Back to market hall and shopping: garlic, wild garlic, pickles. Of these only garlic was of familiar good quality, others not so good. I buy still fruit, having first asked some roubles from my wife. I see also real good purchasing. Two young men buy apples, terribly big and many. They got something, I think, bananas on top of the purchase. We discuss further with the merchant, also the word business was mentioned. Yes, he makes business. I think it is some overstatement and suggest that this word better suits for dwellings and cars. The merchant admits. <p> <a href="20090819863-Talot_torin_laidalla-Viipuri.JPG"><img src="20090819863-Talot_torin_laidalla-Viipuri.JPG" Height=150 align=right></a> Then hurry, hurry to the ship already. Now we go around, I think Salakkalahti and the castle, but nothing more. One of the few minuses of the whole trip that we did not even for quarter of an hour go round in the centre to see old places mentioning them by name. Perhaps it is a question of money and a even more a political question. A Finnish guide is not permitted to guide, the service must be bought from the locals. The price may have been determined deliberately of political reasons so high that it is not considered worth while to be added to the price of the trip. The hosts out of political reasons want to avoid the situation where the former owners get around pointing out their past property and speaking of its decadence. At the side of the market place two really pompous houses have been erected as models, we would say as background. From the window of the train, when passing these regions, nothing as great as these is seen, as I had the opportunity to see a couple of months ago, visiting Moscow and travelling by train. <p> We are here in Vyborg as far from my home village Hämeenkylä in Virolahti as we are from Lappeenranta. Even my family name, the name of the farm, is seen close to the South East corner of Finland, if we click a couple of times the Google map moving a little bit to the West. Try it and <a href="mailto:askokorpela@gmail.com">tell</a> whether you found it! <p> Then command return, or back along the canal to Lappeenranta. There is no diffference in the speed, going up or going down. With full speed to the lock, fasten the tows, to prevent the sideway movements of the ship or the bumping to the walls. Going back the upper port open and the lower closed and almost instantaneously the lock is filled with water up to the level of the higher canal level. Then upper port open and with full speed ahead again. Maybe there is no streaming betseen the locks, at least it is not observable looking from the ship. <p> A trip of five hours feels undeniably dull, particularly as we cannot eat any more. I think that there were very few guest in the restaurant, differently from the morning when tables were full in two servings. Sandwiches and coffee are enough. By the way, in the Round Tower, no sandwiches were available. Only applepie was served with the coffee. Some food would have been available. <p> Was it seven, or was it already eight, light anyway, when we arrived at Lappeenranta, where surprisingly, we were sniffed by a dog searching narcotics. Not seen before. In the spirit of sea, we go to bed at once. I remember that one of the most important caretaker of it was years ago Aarno Piltz, a forest guard, with whom I we spread basic economic information some 40 years ago. Others go to the art museum, they stay there quite a while, so there really was something to see. I interview the owner of the Majurska café. Turns out to be a summer Virolahti inhabitant. <p> I taste some cabbage pastry. The hostess asks, whether I find it Ok. I am obliged to answer that 'something like that'. She wonders what I exactly mean. I say that in my opinion there should be some syrup in it. She admits that there is a recipee containing syrup. After the round in museum also others come to the café. Wife tells in complete accordance with me to the hostess that 'mother-in-law used to put some syrup into the cabbace pastry'. Not so bad looking local art on the walls. A new artist comes to ask the hostess about the chances to have space for exhibition for next summer. About the negotiations is agreed. There are three artists, well known to each other, to share the space next summer. <p> There is still one thing in Lappeenranta: the tomb of the friend Ella should be found. Last year we went there, but without flowers. As a punition a terrible rain broke out. Now also wwe had to look for flowers. Finally wife reasoned out that there must be a flower kiosc at the hospital and the hospital is quite at the side of the graveyard. There really are flowers. And in the farthest away corner of the graveyard we find the tomb of the friend. <p> Now the next place is to be found for lunch somewhere in the neighbourhood of Kouvola, in Elimäki, in the restaurant of 'Alp rose'. Just an ordinary road side establishment, but in no way worse than the food of the recent hotel restaurants. Very tastful home made beer we get as the drink. Coffee and on the road. In Helsinki we arrive at the time of the worst rush hour. Get along all right, however. A very interesting trip. <p> The only minus on the whole trip was really the missing sight-seeing trip in Vyborg. But big thanks to the guide of the travel agency. She was so dedicated to her work that we concluded that she was perhaps the owner of the firm. Very efficiently takes care of everything, arranges a cabin for us to rest and brings us there what we need. Even me as bad walker she notes and conveys me with mys stick past the queu of passport checking. Thank you very much! So also to our company. Our American guests have everything seen, but are content and interested and participate to everything. Kiitos, kiitos! Eräänä kesänä, kun olin työkeikalla Oopperajuhlilla pidin muikkudieettiä, ja tsekkasin samalla muidenkin ravitsemusliikkeiden muikut. Kyllä Majakan oli parhaimmat. Hienoa, että taso on säilynyt. Kerimäen kirkossa on tullut käydyksi monta kertaa sekä töissä ,että turistina. Aina olen ihaillut sen rakenteita ja suuruutta. Tuon metri- kyynärä jutun olen kuullut sentti - tuuma juttuna. Sillä kaavallahan kirkosta on tullut 2.5 kertaa suurempi. Kaupungin johtava porvaristo oli keskiajalla ja pitkään myöhemminkin saksalaista, joka kävi hansakauppaa Tallinnan (Räävelin), Lyypekin, Danzigin ja Novgorodin kanssa. Vyborg oli Suomen kansainvälisin kaupunki, kielinä suomi (aina valtakielenä vuoteen 1944), ruotsi, saksa ja venäjä, viisi uskontoa ja ilmapiirissä tuulahdus Keski-Euroopasta. Suomen toiseksi suurin kaupunki, asukkaita 77000 v. 1939. Nykyinen väestö on vähäisempi ja osin kriminelliä alkuperää Neuvostoimperiumin eri osista. <p> Vyborg nykyiset vallanpitäjät tarjoavat ryöstösaaliilleen historiaa, joka alkaa vuodesta 1944, jolloin kaupunki vallattiin "fasisteilta". Kun rappio ja sodanaikaiset rauniot ovat yhä näkyvissä ja kysyin tätä kerran Vyborgssa käydessäni, sain oppaalta vastauksen, että kaupunki kärsi pahoin pommituksista. Kysyin, ketkä pommittivat? Fasistit, tuli vastaukseksi. <p> Suomi voisi koska tahansa pistää Vyborg kuntoon, mutta kaupunki tulisi liittää Suomeen. Tästä ei nykyinen poliittinen johto salli edes kansalaiskeskustelua saati että tekisi aloitteen Venäjälle päin.
